Michael couldn’t remember the last time he’d been this nervous. Maybe when he’d applied to work as an enforcer and he hadn’t been sure he’d be accepted? Or when he’d started training and had realized he had a lot of work to do to be up for the job? Or when he’d met Sarah and the rest of the team when they’d first been assigned together?

He didn’t know, but he was sure it hadn’t been the same kind of nervous. This one was worse. It was personal, so the way he felt like he might not be enough cut deeper. What did he know about being a good mate? He knew how to deal with a boyfriend, but it wasn’t the same thing.

He pushed open the door of his bedroom and stepped aside so that Cooper could walk in. “I know it’s not much,” he started, but Cooper shook his head.

“Are you kidding me? This is more than I’ve had in my entire life, Michael.”

Michael tried to see the room through Cooper’s eyes.

The bed was a king, and it was to the right, with the headboard against the wall. Michael had made it that morning, but it wasn’t perfect, and he hoped Cooper didn’t care. The door on the left of the bed led to a private bathroom with a shower that was big enough for both of them to wash together if they wanted to. There was a fireplace at the foot of the bed, separating the bed area from the small living room. It wasn’t big, just a few armchairs, and a small couch, a coffee table, and of course, a TV. The wide windows gave onto the backyard, something Cooper would enjoy. There was a tiny balcony, barely big enough for a few chairs, but Michael liked to take his coffee out there in the morning during the summer.

“We can ask to move to a bigger room;” he said even though from Cooper’s reaction, he didn’t think they would.

Cooper glared. “Don’t you dare. I love this place.”

Michael grinned. “Thank God, because I so don’t want to move.” He rubbed the back of his neck. “So, I guess I can sleep on the couch for a bit. You can have the bed.”

Cooper frowned. “Why wouldn’t you sleep in the bed?”

“Because I don’t want to crowd you. I might not know every detail of what happened to you in the past, but I do know that this place is new for you and that it can’t be easy to get used to it.”

Cooper came to stand in front of Michael. “I thought we’d already gone over this?”

He sounded annoyed, and it made Michael smile. He’d half expected Cooper to be quiet and shy, possibly afraid of everyone, including Michael. He was surprised that wasn’t the case. He liked it, though. He realized Cooper was probably trying to hide his fear, and it was working because he didn’t look afraid. That didn’t mean Michael was going to push him, though.

“I know what we talked about, and I’m not saying no to bonding.
